Hunger: Costing Lives in Karachi

We claim to have defeated the darkness of slavery and boast of our development every now and then. The present Government’s claims of providing basic facilities and utilities for commoners and working for the poor were shattered today by a sad incident that happened today in Karachi.

Today about 14 people lost their lives in an attempt to get free food that was being distributed by a local in Khori Garden, Karachi. Most of these were women and children, who were trying to get hold of food items which for them are otherwise unaffordable. This resulted in a stampede and ultimately ended up in this sad incidence. The area where it happened is a narrow street and it’s not possible for hundreds of people to accommodate there at a time. One of the reasons was the disorganization and police or the local authorities were not informed about it to make proper arrangements for it.

These are hunger and poverty struck people for whom even earning one time meal has become impossible. Prices go high on daily basis and it is just not possible to even get bread within the lowest incomes of the poor. ‘Poor getting poorer and rich getting richer’ with every passing second, even survival has become difficult. It seems to be dark ages of slavery where the people would be kept under the sledges of poverty so that don’t even have time to think and just worry about how to survive starving to death.

This is exactly what our government is doing, suppress people to such an extent that they forget to give a thought to raise voice for their rights. Even yesterday our Prime Minister announced that people should be ready for further rise in utility prices. How is it possible live in such a society???

Today’s incident is an eye opening event for the government and the true picture of how they are ruling and depriving people of their basic needs. There is a clear contrast in the standards of living of the commoners and our rulers. Our President spends 10,00,000 every day, on the other hand there are people who hardly earn 100 rupees a day for the entire family. Isn’t it worse than barbarianism??? Wasn’t death a relief for those who lost their life today????

Had there been sufficient availability of things for all, no one would have ever gone for begging for food or looking for free distribution of food for their survival.

An eye-opener here! You ask the question that matters to millions of Pakistanis as much as life matters to a living being. Yes indeed, where is humanity in this picture? What greater shame could there to be a nation? And what else would we need to prove that the claims of a democratic government are self-promoting and self-publicizing propaganda!
