Few days back news came in about the government’s decision to give away more than 500,000 acres of land on lease to Saudi government. It was a bit concerning to give part of the country to somebody which means allowing them to do anything they feel easy with.
There are certain aspects that should not be ignored while deciding on any such thing which allows foreign hands to operate matters within our country. The policy makers should definitely keep in mind the aftermath of these decisions in the long run. For an agricultural country leasing its land is not a sound idea.
Another motive is that once taken charge of the land the Saudi government can do whatever it wishes to do on that land. How can one allow a foreign control of land just for sake of money? This seems to be a continuation of the privatization of National assets like banks, telecommunication and several other departments. The new owners can throw out any employee whenever they feel like. There is no job security; several people became jobless with the commencement of such dealings.
There is no reservation that foreign ventures helps efficiently in development of a nation but it can also not be denied that giving command of one’s assets means assigning your control. There should be a balance of authority between the foreign investors and Government. This will not create insecurity among the citizens concerning their national entity.
All possibilities should be taken into consideration to evade any situation where we are not even left with the choice of repenting over our judgment for the sake of money.
